Over half the motorists who were caught speeding in Lancashire last year turned down the chance to go on a speed awareness course in favour of three points, it has been reported.
Apparently a total of 53,278 people caught by speed cameras in the county in 06/07 were offered the course, which costs £80 and lasts for one day.
But of those offered the course, only 19,396 were understood to have completed it - instead opting for three points and a hike in their insurance.
John Davies, project manager at the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership, which refers people to the courses, told the Lancashire Evening Post: ‘It's individual choice.
‘We're trying to encourage people to go but sometimes it involves people taking time off work and they just don't fit it in.
‘We have tried to make it easier for people to attend by introducing a course on Saturday.
‘The feedback is excellent from the courses and it does have an effect on people's driving behaviour.’
