The world’s cheapest car has been unveiled by Indian firm Tata.
Apparently putting themselves on a collision course with Apple Computers, the company has called the car ‘Nano’ and it will sell for 100,000 rupees (£1,277).
To put the car into perspective it will cost around the same price as five 16GB Apple iPod Touch music players.
The idea behind the car is to stop families from all using a motorbike or scooter to get around, giving them a safer alternative.
The car has horrified environmental campaigners, however, who say it will put thousands more cars on India’s already crowded and polluted streets.
The car may only have a 33bhp, but it is rear-wheel drive and the 642cc is in the back, which could provide a bit of fun during monsoon season.
Don’t expect many toys though, it has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, although there will be two deluxe models.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata, who you could say is a Tata source, said: 'I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby.
'It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family.
'Tata Motors’ engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal.
'Today, we indeed have a People’s Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions.
'We are happy to present the People’s Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility.'
