Nobody anywhere has ever said that the McLaren 720S is not fast enough because it definitely, without a doubt is fast enough. The rear-wheel drive supercar produces 570hp per tonne and can propel its occupants from zero to 100mph in 5.3 seconds and onto 186mph 16 seconds later, making it quicker to both marks than the Ferrari 488 GTB. But for some, knowing that is not enough.
For those people, German supercar tuner Novitec has released a series of upgrades for the 720hp Super Series model, which it promises enhance straight-line performance and handling. For such a sweetly setup supercar the latter seems hard to believe, but an increased power output for the car’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 is very believable - given the safety margins OEM car brands leave in their road cars for tuners to exploit.
Novitec claims to have extracted an additional 86hp (!) from the 720S’s mid-mounted motor, thanks in part to the use of a new, freer flowing stainless steel exhaust system complete with a less restrictive catalytic converter. Along with new ECU mapping, these changes push peak output up to 806hp at 6,700rpm and 648lb ft of torque at 6,300rpm. Those are serious numbers and, as the video below shows, apparently help to turn the car into a flame-throwing lunatic.
Buyers can also add new springs that work with the car’s factory-fit Proactive Chassis Control II technology, lowering the ride height and, according to Novitec, maximising the car’s “driving performance”, whatever that means. We’d expect such a change to hinder the 720S’s ability to shift from hardcore supercar into a supple, forgiving machine. But we are, of course, happy to be proven wrong.
Additionally, Novitec offers the usual raft of exterior parts common to tuners like this. There are 10-spoke aluminium wheels of 20- (front) and 21-inch (rear) diameters and a long list of carbonfibre body trim, which Novitec claims enhances aerodynamic performance. The parts do add a flare of extra aggression to the 720S’s already purposeful-looking body... if that's what you're after.
But Novitec hasn’t quite finished with the 720S, however, as it lists an ‘N Largo’ model on the website as ‘coming soon’. This suggests further modifications may be on the way. We'll reserve judgement until the time comes.
