The summer is very much supercar silly season, with all manner of exotica brought out from climate controlled storage to make the most of the better weather. From the sublime to the ridiculous, and everything in between, this is peacocking primetime. Keen to grab a slice of the action, Novitec has just released a tuning package for the McLaren 720S Spider.
The German company has form with McLaren’s Super Series model, having launched its wild N-Largo kit for it last year. By comparison this Spider, decked out with what appear to be forged carbon kitchen surfaces and dropped to within millimetres of the floor, is pretty modest. All things being relative and that.
Those familiar with the Novitec script will recognise all the catalogue items this car has been fitted with. 806hp (and 648lb ft) is the big talking point; a tad more than a Senna, yes, and achieved through a Novitec Stage 2 power upgrade. As with the Ferrari 488 Pista, the power gain is achieved predominantly through the ‘N-Tronic’ ECU work, which liberates 53hp for starters – the rest coming from a Novitec race exhaust and a ‘catalyst replacement pipe’. Given a 720S can often feel like it’s producing a chunk more than its claimed wer, an 800hp upgrade must be extraordinary.
While Novitec makes claims that its suspension engineers “have thought of you and your needs in every way” as well as having “your driving comfort and performance… at the forefront of our development”, it’s hard to imagine a better ride/handling compromise being struck than the standard car. Still, that hasn’t stopped them trying, with a set of 30mm lower sports springs offered with aluminium spacers.
Interestingly, Novitec’s wheels offered to complement the package are bespoke to McLarens and aren’t offered with upgrades for other supercars. Certain options bring a fractionally wider tyre, too, which should further boost the dynamics. Those after the very maximum, of course, will need to opt for the carbon aero upgrades, all subjected to “extensive wind tunnel testing” and said to perfectly balance form and function.
Those who covet a 720S capable of 215mph and which “further hones” the considerable talents of the standard car will be pleased to know that the Novitec Spider modifications are available now. Lacking a base car to transform? The PH classifieds await…
