There's always plentiful talk when Nissan launches another Z car, as with the
latest 370Z
recently, that it's 'Japan's muscle car'. That is probably true, but what about a genuine hunk of Americana at the same price?
For £35,320, Chevrolet will offer UK customers a nipped 'n' tucked Camaro 6.2 V8 with 432hp and a six-speed manual gearbox. Makes you smile just reading it, doesn't it? In pure power terms, this demolishes the Z, whether as a 328hp 370 GT or a 344hp NISMO, the latter costing £36,995.
Of course, there will be areas where Nissan's coupe trumps the big Chevy, but it certainly shows the USA still does bang for your buck better than anybody else.
Elsewhere, Chevrolet claims this Camaro represents 'the most significant redesign of the fifth-generation Camaro'. So whilst the tweaked front grilles (the top one is narrower, the bottom one wider) may seem only for cosmetic purposes, they contribute to improved aerodynamics and heat management. The bonnet vents are also functional, whilst the 'sculptural deck lid' and diffuser at the rear also aid aerodynamic performance.
The biggest change inside the facelifted Camaro is the introduction of Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system, operated through a seven-inch touchscreen. The head-up display has also been updated.
Away from the headline-grabbing base model, Chevrolet will also offer automatic and convertible Camaros for yellow-bellied cowards. The auto combats its reduced power output (405hp) with a remote-start function that should remain cool for at least a week. The convertible is canvas-roofed and will cost £40,320; a price has not yet been released for the automatic option, although a premium of around £1,500 seems likely.
British deliveries of the revised Camaro will commence in November, but in LHD only. For those wanting a muscle car with the steering wheel on the right, the next Ford Mustang is the only option, due in the UK in 2015.
Finally, if the thought of driving a box-fresh Chevrolet muscle car through a dank English autumn isn't too appealing, don't forget the PH American Tour kicks off in late October. They have Camaros available...
