The Fisker EMotion, a long-awaited successor to the Fisker Karma, will make its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show tomorrow. Another four-wheeled debut that takes place in Las Vegas rather than Detroit during January, you may note. And, well, it's a bit more interesting than VR fitness apps...
The EMotion follows the Karma's template as a four-door, four-seat GT EV, the car said to offer "luxury of the future" according to Henrik Fisker. He's tweeted about the fancy leathers and the interior 'environment' and everything.
Perhaps of more interest to PH, though, is the technology that the EMotion will bring to electric vehicles. It will use a solid state battery instead of a lithium ion one, capable of 2.5 times more energy storage. In theory this offers a solution to a lot of the EV traditional problems: greater energy storage means fewer batteries are required (reducing weight), but also an increase in range too. As such Fisker also says the car will do more than 400 miles on a charge, with 125 miles of charge said to be achievable in just nine minutes.
Beyond that the EMotion should deliver an array of autonomous driving tech, including a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor - that identifies distance by illuminating objects with a pulsed laser light and then measuring the reflected pulses - able to create a 3D map of its surroundings. "Full autonomy" is what Fisker believes to be possible, giving you as the driver time to access to the fully connected data network and The Hybrid Shop nationwide network. Just don't forget that you're still responsible...
It sounds like there's plenty to be encouraged by from the EMotion, particularly when you consider how far electric vehicles have come in the half a dozen years since the impressive Karma. More details will follow at the reveal tomorrow, but we're already told to expect the $130,000 car in the UK the year after next. Fingers crossed the doors can make production too...
