Ford F-150 Raptor
definitely still isn't a UK production model. And it's hardly like the Baja 1000 is a huge event for British motorsport fans. But when a racing pick up is released that looks as good as this, PH will more than likely cover it. Because it must be brilliant fun, that's why. There are some stories on British sports cars out already today...
Tell us this doesn't look entertaining?
This F-150 Raptor will compete in the 'stock full class' of the 2016 Baja 1000, which begins on November 16. To comply with the regs of that category, it runs the production spec 450hp Ecoboost V6 and 10-speed automatic gearbox, with standard (but recalibrated) springs and dampers plus even the wheels and tyres from the showroom model. The changes are mainly those required for flat-out desert running: roll cage, puncture-resistant fuel cell, seats with harnesses and LED lights bright enough to top up Donald Trump's permatan. Maybe.
The car is in fact a pre-production Raptor, the race entry being used as "a validation platform for performance and durability testing"; certainly more exciting than runs up the M40! It will of course be the perfect environment for the Raptor's drive modes, including the Baja setting. Driver Greg Foutz says "it's miles better than the previous off-road mode" as it keeps the turbo spooled up and at optimum revs.
It would appear then that competition is still being used to hone production cars, albeit in a rather dramatic and slightly OTT American fashion. But if this Raptor wins its class at the Baja, surely that will make buyers more open to the idea of a V6 instead of a V8? Ford will find out when the truck goes on sale soon; until then, this particular Raptor is now on display at the SEMA show. Don't park too close.
