It wasn’t very long ago at all that Aston Martin interiors were criticised for not integrating enough tech. Features were out of date, screens were too small and lacking resolution; the whole infotainment experience at least a generation behind that of its rivals. So how’s this for a turnaround: Aston Martin is now the first manufacturer in the world to offer CarPlay Ultra in its newer models. It’s said to bring together ‘the best of Aston Martin and the best of iPhone for the ultimate in-car experience.’
Ultra is essentially an extended version of the Apple smartphone mirroring that’s become a near-essential bit of kit in recent years. It can now take over the instrument cluster as well as the infotainment screen, and Ultra means climate and radio can be controlled by CarPlay as well. Those worried that cars are simply becoming four-wheeled phones best look away now; those who like the idea of a car being an extension of their device are going to be thrilled.
Aston and Apple have worked together on design themes and customisation to ensure that there’s equal influence on the interface. However attached we are to our phones, if you’d spent £200k on an Aston you’d still want it to feel and look like one. So the layout aims to be ‘consistent with the brand’s unique design philosophy and remains instantly recognisable as Aston Martin’. Certainly what can be seen in the vid, with conventional-looking dials and ‘Handbuilt in Great Britain’ around them, ought to appease the traditionalists. Or you can have a huge map in Audi Virtual Cockpit style as one of ‘a number of seamlessly designed options’ for the driver’s display. Configurability and customisation in a new Aston no longer extend to just the leather and paint you’d like.
Perhaps most importantly, the Applefication looks neat and cohesive, filling screen space as it should and not appearing to jar with the surroundings. That’s the benefit of the latest infotainment system - because it’s Aston’s own, it could talk directly to Apple about how CarPlay Ultra could be incorporated, rather than having to go through a parent company or supplier. Which probably will have helped in getting it to market first as well. Aston says the move ‘further cements the marque’s position at the forefront of technology and innovation.’
While this next generation of a CarPlay will make it to more manufacturers in time, it’s an Aston-only thing for the moment. And from right now, too - albeit only for the USA and Canada, though every global market will get it in the next 12 months. Don’t fret if you’ve just placed an order, either, as Ultra will be available as a dealer-fit upgrade over time on all those cars with the current infotainment. All that’s required is an iPhone 12 or later (those with new Astons surely don’t have old phones) and up-to-date software - iOS 18.54 or later. Best not show any friends with a DB11 or DBS once it’s done, though; they’ll die of jealousy.
Adrian Hallmark added: “The integration of CarPlay Ultra is a clear example of the dedication to collaborate with the best companies in the world to bring unique experiences and in-vehicle capabilities to our customers. Building on our in-house state-of-the-art infotainment system, CarPlay Ultra will provide additional functionality and personalisation opportunities which place Aston Martin at the forefront of infotainment in the sector.” The latest range of Astons gets more desirable still…
