No question about it, the revival of Bloodhound was one of 2019's 'good news' stories. And in a year distressingly short of the stuff, that's significant. Moreover, there's always been more than a whiff of backroom-boys, mend-and-make-do about Britain's latest land speed record challenger, and that's significant, too. Because if there's anything the nation needs right now, it's a resurgence of the ingenuity, pluck and scratchy jumpers that helped us muddle through the second half of the 20th century.
Of course no-one was wearing a scratchy jumper on the Hakskeenpan - they've been replaced by Rab jackets and wraparound sunglasses - but the same ethos shines through nonetheless. This new video doesn't seek to deliver anything more consequential than a quick behind-the-scenes look at what happen on any given day in the desert, but its modesty merely confirms that it's typically small groups of clever people, duly inspired and rallied behind a common purpose, that end up changing the world.
Let's all hope that the LSR team continue on to that ultimate goal without too many more unexpected wrinkles in the bed sheet. It's the least they deserve...
