Every new Lotus is a significant announcement, but the Type 131 was always going to be a big one. The last ICE-engined Lotus, the first all new car since the Evora and the first with Evija influence now has a name: Emira.
Meaning 'commander' or 'leader', Emira follows the Lotus tradition of 'E' names; it's been teased on social media through morse code over the past few days. The confirmation today is deliberate, too, as the birthday of Samuel Morse. Don't worry if you didn't get that either.
There isn't much to decipher from these images, even if the Evija influence is clear. We know that the car will use a new aluminium intensive structure and offered with engines that have either four- or six cylinders - there won't be a hybrid.
Lotus managing director Matt Windle said of the Emira: "It's the most accomplished Lotus for generations - the perfectly packaged, powered and formed sports car. Beautifully proportioned, shrink-wrapped, but with comfort, technology and ergonomics built in. With a design inspired by the Evija all-electric hypercar, it's a game-changing Lotus sports car."
The car will make its full debut on Tuesday July 6th. Expect to hear plenty more before then!
