Despite everything, 2022 is looking like another great year for fast cars. And perhaps nothing is as eagerly anticipated over the next 12 months as the new Lotus Emira. Having heard about it, written about it, seen it in a storm at Hethel and in a studio at night, there's not long to wait until those outside of Lotus get to finally have a drive. Suffice it to say expectations for the last combustion-engined Hethel-built sports car are pretty high...
To further whet the appetite, this new 'Emira: Driving Performance' video has just been released. Fronted by Gavan Kershaw, it covers the Emira's four drive modes - Tour, Sport, Race, Fully Off - and shows the new car off at the Hethel test track. You can probably see where the video ends up, involving as it does Lotus's Director of Vehicle Attributes, an empty circuit, and a new sports car with a limited-slip diff - there's a lot of oversteer. Big, smoky, silly skids, proving - if ever there was any doubt - that the new Emira can misbehave like the very best.
"The whole package is tuned to give you maximum reward and confidence. It's 'For The Drivers'", said Kershaw of the Emira. That mantra certainly isn't in danger of being forgotten anytime soon, but even in what's looking like a decent year, there aren't many more three-pedal, six-cylinder, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports cars coming - so you can excuse some Lotus excitement as well. Let's hope the Emira lives up to the colossal hype.
