What do you do when, as a fast Ford nut for many decades, you require something a little more practical than your BDG-engined Escort Mk2 rally car? Simple: you sell up, and commission a Transit camper van build, of course...
That's exactly what Steve North has done, taking a standard LWB Transit to MS-RT - which has some form in tuning Transits - and Wellhouse Leisure to create his perfect camper. As both firms are what Ford calls 'Qualified Vehicle Modifiers', the work is being shared for all to see by Brentwood HQ.
Quite something, isn't it? Steve himself admitted that "I wanted an MS-RT Transit campervan built to my own specifications and my expectations are pretty high". So the van has a full kitchen in it, with hobs, sink and oven, a seating area that looks nothing like any other Transit (trimmed in blue and white, of course), and an extendable roof for the attic sleeping area. Clearly a lot of time and effort has gone into making this probably the most hospitable Transit that ever there's been.
Outside it's mostly recognisable as an MS-RT Transit, with the bodykit, 18-inch wheels, twin exhaust and trademark graphics. The camper is mechanically standard though, using a 170hp diesel and six-speed automatic.
The Transit camper is going to be used, too, Steve eagerly anticipating "exploring some Ford shows and motorcycle shows" as well as "travelling around the country seeking out new adventures" - good on him.
Furthermore, for those wishing to follow in Steve's footsteps with a Transit motorhome of their own, there's good news: Ford will sell you one later this year. The Custom Nugget camper - yes, that is the real name - is already on sale in a few European markets, and will be launched over here in the autumn. Prices and spec for the UK are to follow, though expect it to cost a little less than Steve's bespoke commission...
