In the 1930s, which was a jolly long time ago, mower manufacturer ATCO made a car for children that used one of its engines for propulsion. You can see it in the grid below.
Blink and you'll miss it...
Now John Cowperthwaite, who you may remember as the creator of the swing bin racer a few years back, is back with another idea, inspired by the ATCO. The 'Safety Racer' is made from two compost bins (!), with the mudguards made from a water butt and both floor and bulkheads from plywood. Simple.
Power is now from a 49cc mini moto engine (it was a cordless drill before), with disc brakes too. It's designed for children up to 10 years old.
But here's the best bit, as it was a few years ago: the price. Lightning cars will sell you the plans, patterns and instructions for £33 (plus £4.40 recorded delivery). Or, if you're quick, you can take advantage of a half-price £18 offer. You will have to source the remaining parts, but that does sound like tremendous value for something fun and a bit different for the children.
Would you build one for your little darlings? Have you perhaps already? We'd love to see your creations. And for more info on the Safety Racer, watch the video below or see the website. Good luck!
