No sooner does the last Super Sport ever made go up for sale on PH than a shiny new one appears. The latest Chiron Super Sport is very much the sister car to the strictly limited Super Sport 300+ that Bugatti launched in the wake of its world-first run beyond 300mph. Only this time round the emphasis is less on grand speed and more on grand touring.
"The Chiron Super Sport stands for increased comfort and elegance coupled with even greater performance and higher speeds. With this new creation, we established another distinct personality within the Chiron family. It is the essence of what we learned and developed in recent years - the ultimate grand tourer," explained Bugatti boss, Stephan Winkelmann.
In the firm's mind, the latest Super Sport is a counterpart to the Pur Sport version it launched not so long ago. Where that car was built to master corners with heightened lateral agility, this version is all about combining huge speed with 'absolute luxury'. To that end, you get the 25cm longer body used by the 300+ to hold the laminar flow to the bodywork as long as possible. Which is a good thing because it makes the Chiron better looking.
It also shares most of the earlier car's styling alterations, including vertically aligned exhaust pipes which helps boost the effect of the prominent rear diffuser and the sharper front end. Elsewhere there are new five-spoke aluminium wheels which are exclusive to the Super Sport, although you can have the Pur Sport's lighter magnesium wheels as an option. Either way you get the bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres built to withstand 300mph.
Interestingly, Bugatti doesn't dwell on the interior - other than to note its blend of natural elements and suitability for 'high-speed' continental trips - but it does extensively recap the masterclass performed on the W16 engine. We've seen all this before, of course, but it's impossible not regard 1,600hp as a mighty achievement, rendered by larger turbochargers and modifications made to the oil pump and cylinder head.
It delivers its higher output slightly later than the standard Chiron, and is good for 0-124mph in 5.8 seconds. Bugatti says the chassis is developed specifically for the Super Sport (although it's unclear whether or not it's shared with the 300+) and is intended to create a 'firmer and more rigid connection to the vehicle' for better confidence at high speed. At any rate it is adaptive, and delivers a choice of four drive modes: EB, Handling, Autobahn, and Top Speed. All yours for £2.75m. Bargain.
