Lamborghini will use augmented reality to reveal its Huracan Evo RWD Spyder tomorrow, heralding the arrival of its most affordable drop top yet. Like the coupe RWD, the Spyder's use of rear-wheel drive and a V10 tuned to 'only' 610hp will likely lower its price by around £40k. Compared with the all-wheel drive, 640hp Evo Spyder, the RWD will be lighter and obviously livelier; as our pre-lockdown test in the RWD coupe proved.
Expect a carryover of the tin-topped car's high-speed composure and surprisingly strong traction, only now with more access to that V10 wail. The coupe enjoys a 40:60 weight distribution, and carries 33kg less clutter over the nose. We await tomorrow's announcement to learn how much the roof mechanism has affected those numbers.
Either way, the Spyder's USP - as it is with the existing model pictured - is theatre. We know from the latter that the firm's aero boffins can drastically trim buffeting, with rear arch-mounted bearing ducts there to channel turbulence away from the cabin, so the vocals - and not wind noise - remain a focal point. Only now, revs will be freer to rise and fall with only one axle to power.
Lamborghini is keen to stress that the midday reveal - hosted on its homepage - of its RWD drop-top will be an industry first, using Apple virtual augmented reality to put a video image of the new car onto iPhone or iPad users' "driveways, yards, or even living rooms". That's a cool idea, even if it's clearly one driven by lockdown, rather than a sudden change in launch practices.
Company CEO Stefano Domenicali said: "At a time of major business challenges, Lamborghini is innovating once again and exploring new methods of communication. New technologies have accelerated rapidly during this time of global emergency, and Lamborghini is pioneering exciting new possibilities. Starting tomorrow, Lamborghini can be in everyone's home thanks to Apple's AR technology, which is available on hundreds of millions of AR-enabled devices around the world."
Fun, indeed, but we're most looking forward to having a go for real...
