Volvo and big family buses go together like Ferrari and sports cars, or Mercedes and executive saloons: it's what their reputation is built on. So it's pleasing to see that, in a world of supermini crossovers and Sports Activity Coupes, Volvo still sees the worth in a conventional large estate.
An estate that's just an estate? Yes indeed!
This is the new V90, third in the new series of '90' models that also includes the S90 and XC90. It's described by Volvo as taking "the premium estate a clear step forward in terms of aesthetics materials and finish, while living up to the ultimately practical nature of any true estate." Like those cars, it's built on Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture.
Full technical specs have been announced ahead of a Geneva debut and, as you might have hoped, the V90 is huge. It's 4,936mm long with a 2,941mm wheelbase and the width is 1,890mm. Total boot capacity, with seats folded and using under floor storage, is 1,526 litres. Should be enough!
The engine range comprises a T5 and T6 petrol with 254 and 320hp respectively, plus a 410hp T8 hybrid. The diesel offerings are a 190hp D4 and 235hp D5. The lower powered petrol and diesel engines are front-wheel drive, the rest four-wheel drive. All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Like the S and XC, the V90 features Volvo's 'Pilot Assist' semi-autonomous drive technology with 'large animal detection' - hurrah! - also available. The interior is also carried over, which should meet with plenty of approval. Feet off the seats kids...
There are no details yet on UK availability or prices; expect those to follow at Geneva or soon after. But dog walkers, antique dealers and estate fans of Britain, your new car awaits!
