It's no secret we're big fans of the AMG GT 4-door on PH, its ability to combine epic performance with the feel of an overgrown sports car really something to experience. Oh sure, it's tremendously expensive and looks a bit odd from some angles, but it's a sensational car to drive.
As if to prove the point, AMG has just released this onboard video. Which, you're thinking, looks like any other Nurburgring video: isn't that fast approaching Schwedenkreuz, look how stable it is through miss-hit-miss, did they really just brake there for Bergwerk and so on. However, it isn't just any other manufacturer Nordschleife video; the publish date might say August 26th, 2020, but this GT 4-door onboard is actually from October 2018, back when the 63 S claimed an executive car record of 7:30.11.
Now, those who've been paying close attention will know that that's a record just pipped by Porsche, the new Panamera Turbo S having gone just three tenths faster with a 7:29.81. Both are there as officially recognised times on the Nurburgring website, two cars separated across 13 miles by little more than the blink of an eye. So, AMG has released this video to draw some attention to the fact: the car it's been selling for a couple of years now is still just as quick as a shiny new Porsche Panamera, don't forget, and here's the proof. You never know, it might encourage people to buy one...
There's more to publishing this onboard than just a gentle jogging of the memory, however. The video description expands into something a little more cryptic: "Our record lap was the best of its class and only 0.3 seconds off of a recent record time you may have heard about. Maybe it's high time to hit the track again..." Those who've been paying even closer attention might have seen the AMG GT 4-door spy shotspublished earlier this week from the Nurburgring, a car believed to be the hybrid GT73e with anything up to 800hp. It was suggested that AMG might use the car to reclaim its Nordschleife top dog status, and here we are a matter of days later with AMG hinting at doing just that - how exciting.
Moreover, this will have been very carefully orchestrated; it's surely not a coincidence that Mercedes allowed its prototype to be seen and released this video in the same week that Porsche wanted all attention on its new Panamera. Which would also mean, presumably, that further news about this hybrid GT can't be far off, because why build up the anticipation to then leave it unfulfilled with no more news for weeks? We're approaching what would have traditionally been motor show season once more, so don't be surprised if AMG tries to claim some limelight for itself over the coming weeks with a new GT. Certainly 800hp ought to be enough to claim back a few tenths over Porsche...
