Credit where it’s due to AMG, there’s a whole lotta variety in the GT range these days. There’s one with the engine from an A-Class, there’s one with a bit of a road racer vibe, and there’s one with the power to turn your insides upside down. As well as the 55 and 63. But there’s one lacking for the moment: a Black Series, or a GT R, or whatever the really super duper circuit-focused GT will be called. This new concept from AMG, the GT Track Sport, hints at what might be to come.
There’s form here, of course, AMG totally transforming the old GT - think flat-plane crank, carbon panels, 400kg of downforce at 155mph - to create the Black Series. So whatever this Concept GT Track Sport becomes, AMG is suggesting for the moment that it ‘provides a preview of a possible expansion of the GT series with a V8 engine’, expect it to be a no-holds-barred track car.
The Black Series recorded a 6:48.047 Nordschleife lap almost five years ago, which required a Manthey Performance Kit on a GT2 RS to beat. Even the Mustang GTD hasn’t been able to go faster than the AMG, and you can bet that Affalterbach would love the record time for Sports Cars back. Gotta get in there before the Manthey GT3 RS does…
Certainly, this new concept would explain why the GT called a Pro came out tamer than expected - they were building up to this. Check out the swan-neck rear wing, a chin spoiler the width of a caber, and some very chunky Michelins. They’re serious alright. For the moment, AMG is confirming nothing more than the presence of a V8; quite frankly, that seems enough of a win on its own. Beyond that, we’re told to expect a car built ‘to set new standard and record times.’ Bring it on.
