It would be reasonable to say that convertible SUVs don’t exactly have the best reputation - think Range Rover Evoque and VW T-Roc. But there are one or two that can turn the conventional wisdom on its head. The most obvious examples being Jeeps, Defenders, Suzuki Samurais, that sort of thing.
And don’t forget the Mercedes Benz G-Class. Perhaps because of its origins, it’s always felt appropriate for a soft top to exist. So it did, for the lifetime of both the first and second generation G. There were civilian and military spec cars produced over the years; maybe the messages started to get muddied a tad as the G-Class grew ever more luxurious, but the drop top soldiered on. And on: who can forget the recent Landaulets?
And now the G-Class Convertible is making a comeback. There hasn’t been one yet for the W463 generation, introduced in 2018, maybe with Mercedes simply too busy making a bazillion G63s to think about. But the soft top is definitely coming, Mercedes announcement on the expansion of a product portfolio nothing if not to the point: ‘We’re expanding the family further: a G-Class cabriolet is coming. We’ll be offering the open-top G-Class in almost every market around the world, including the US.’ Along with the teaser image, that’s all we know.
The mention of the US is important, because that seems likely to be a huge market for a drop-top G. Especially if the G63 is offered. Given the old Landaulet only used very senior engines, that must be likely. A convertible G-Class with EQ Technology could be interesting, too. For now all we can do is speculate, though you can rest assured that Mercedes will surely be making a big deal about this one. Here’s a classic V8 for sale, just to get you in the mood…
