It's hard to believe that the news of Lorinser bulk buying Swiss army G-Wagens was only in January. But then it's been a funny old year. Basically, Lorinser had dozens of old Mercs, and was planning to sell them to civilians. Either as fairly rudimentary army wagons, or with the full Lorinser restomod treatment. A novel idea.
Unsurprisingly, it's been popular: "The demand was and remains enormous", says MD Marcus Lorinser. In fact, the G has proved so popular that Lorinser made one for themselves, having a few 230GE hardtops at their disposal leading to the 'Recreational Vehicle' idea. Apparently the car has been designed to "leave the well-trodden paths to find true adventure."
To that end, the G RV had its underbody blasted and preserved, with all-terrain tyres and LED headlights fitted as well. The real changes, though, are inside, where the G-Wagen now features auxiliary heating (with batteries that can be charged by solar panels), 220V power outlets, a microwave, a sink, two folding beds, a folding table and panniers (in addition to the cupbords) for storage. There's even an outdoor shower and sunsail - they've thought of everything. Lorinser says its RV is "ready for any situation - whether at a campsite or on an expedition trip."
With automotive adventures hopefully back on the cards at some point soon, the Lorinser RV looks like the perfect travel companion. It's for sale at €69,000; given flying looks a little tricky for a while, how better to get away for a while? Furthermore, if this G doesn't light your (camp) fire, Lorinser still has plenty in stock for bespoke commissions. And don't worry, the map livery is optional...
