PH likes a van, and specifically a Caddy. Having used one in 2018 to ferry Sunday Service stuff here, there and everywhere, the entry point into the VW van range served us perfectly: quick enough, big enough, VW enough to sit in happily for hour after hour.
Now, though, having been on sale in its current form for more than 15 years - the Type 2K was built off the first VW Touran, using bits that went into the Golf Mk5 - the Caddy is being renewed. These sketches preview an entirely new van that will be revealed in February, VW stating that "no screw has been left untouched" in the overhaul, promising a "dynamic, confident, sporty and yet practical" van that will "again become the benchmark vehicle in the A segment".
While the sketches must naturally be taken with a hefty pinch of salt, primarily because those wheels appear to be about 24 inches in diameter, the silhouette and front end at least look believable for a production van. It's worth noting, too, that VW has already confirmed that the LED rear lights will appear on the real thing. This particular Caddy is the Cargo, pointing to the panel van production version; while the large rear window here previews the non-commercial Caddy, those using their VW for business will be able to swap that for a non-transparent tailgate and a swing door.
This "100 per cent new, 100 per cent Caddy" is clearly a sportier proposition than the outgoing car, even allowing for what will change for production. That's a very deliberate decision, too, VW suggesting that the van might appeal to those "involved in sport and active leisure pursuits" who could consider the Caddy as "an interesting, practical alternative."
Nothing further has been confirmed about the new Caddy, but it surely wouldn't be daft to assume an electric powertrain offered alongside the petrol and diesel engines, as well as the connected and active safety features prevalent in the current VW car range. More Caddy facts when we have them!
