The weirder the BMW M Performance Parts seem to become, the more popular they get. Curious. You wouldn’t necessarily have 5 Series and i5 buyers down as those after carbon side skirts attachments, an M Performance Aramid antenna cover or floor mats with the tricolour, but here we are. Both now have the option of ‘aerodynamic, interior and chassis parts… for high-performance customising’.
There really is everything, too. Carbon is the main draw, with an M Performance Carbon front attachment, Carbon Pro rear spoiler and rear diffuser on offer, plus the mirror caps and sill plates. There’s even a carbon fuel filler cap, for heaven’s sake, which features ‘double-sided adhesive tape on the inside and can be attached to the existing fuel filler cap by the customer’. Let’s not forget who’s always right here, folks.
Mercifully, there are some parts in the catalogue that might have some actual bearing on the car. There are lighter alloy wheels available from 19- to 21-inch, plus M Performance brakes that can be spotted with the red calipers.
The internally ventilated and perforated rotors ‘provide improved thermal load-bearing capacity and thus deliver even higher breaking power under extreme conditions, for example on the race track.’ Again you’ve got to wonder who’s taking a 5 Series to circuit - though seemingly the demand is there.
Then we’re into the really silly stuff. Winter wheels can go in the branded tyre bag, there’s a key case made up of Alcantara, Nappa leather embossed with carbon fibre effect, plus the digitally printed accent stripes. It’s a pretty extraordinary goody bag of M Performance.
Says something of the G60 5 Series, then, that it doesn’t look all that bad with everything added on. The carbon bits make the ride height look lower, the wheels fill out the arches, and the diffuser… well, there have been worse ones. Maybe they’re onto something with this M Performance stuff. BMW evidently believes there's demand, with all the accessories set to be available from the launch of both 5 Series and i5 in October.
