The Polo GTI 25 may well have passed you by when it was announced back in May, because that’s kind of the Polo GTI thing. And black accents, new logos and fresh stickers aren’t going to change that. But, hey, it’s a light, front-drive petrol hatch with more than 200hp - in 2023, we’ll take them however they come. Even if that is in Ascot Grey.
Today orders open for the VW Polo GTI Edition 25, though weirdly it says that the car is on sale from August 3rd. Count us in the ‘today years old’ group who thought they were the same thing. Whatever, it’s going to cost £31,295, which will probably elicit the same amount of air sucked through teeth as most new car prices these days. In fairness, a limited edition Polo GTI was never likely to stand out as a value proposition, and those who were going to by an i20 N anyway were never going to have their head swayed. VW will more likely point to the incredible success of the Golf R 333 - sold out in eight minutes at more than twice the price - as evidence that its limited edition strategy is just fine. There will be 350 cars allocated for the UK out of 2,500 in total, and it seems unlikely that any will remain unspoken for, whether here or anywhere else, for very long. People like Polos, VW GTIs and limited editions, especially when they might well be the last of their kind.
That said, if this announcement has you wondering what other GTIs might be available for £31,295, join the club. Take the old Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40 for example, probably as good as the old model got (aside from the very limited Clubsport S). This 2017 car ticks a lot of boxes as a three-door, white manual, and has covered just 18,000 miles. A nice way to spend £25k. The current Polo GTI, the car this Edition is derived from, can be bought from £14k. And it seems like originals might just be creeping up in value - this 2000 example is £4k. Be the perfect thing for the PH25 car park…
