Turbocharged Porsches of the 21st century are, despite prodigious power in some cases, really quite refined and manageable vehicles. Progress in turbo technology means in some cases they can barely be detected, meaning both greater performance and efficiency in a range of sports cars. Plus a few complaints about noise...
Whatever, this is not a refined and manageable turbocharged Porsche. It's an 800hp 935 K3, one of the last (and most powerful) versions of the all-conquering 935, driven by Charlie Nearburg at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this August. And it is, quite frankly, a fantastic video.
Turbocharged acceleration is something to behold, isn't it? The way this Porsche just consumes the straight bits at Laguna Seca is frightening, the scenery blurred and the pace just relentless despite gears being thrown at it. But of course it's laggy too, requiring quite a few revs before it really hauls ass. You can tell when the boost kicks in, as that's usually when the corrective lock is applied...
This sort of performance around an airfield would be cool to watch, but that it's in the sunshine at Laguna Seca, surrounded by a load of other cool racing cars (they're lapped pretty quickly), makes it all the more special. What a car, what a piece of driving - enjoy!
