The Porsche 928 could be making a return in 2014 or 2015 as Porsche is said to be planning a two-door GT among its spin-offs from the next-generation Panamera platform.
Admittedly the 'all-new 928' story is one of those perennial merry-go-round favourites among car journalists (probably because we all want it to happen), but this time the whisperings might just turn into reality, according to our newshound chums on Autocar, who broke the story.
The car, which could possibly be badged '929', would come as both a coupe and a cabrio, giving Porsche a chance to emulate the sales success of the likes of the Aston Martin DB9 and Ferrari California.
But it won't happen until after the second iteration of the Panamera four-door arrives, it seems. "At the moment, derivatives of the Panamera are not planned for the first generation," says Autocar's source. "We hope to add them to the second generation, provided we can find necessary capacity."
Other derivatives could be on the cards, too, with a shooting-brake-style sporty estate a possibility (think Ferrari FF, but not quite as expensive. And with two more doors).
