In case you haven't already noticed, the SUV market is where it's at these days. Sorry PHers, but that's the truth of it and it's our job to report the facts. Of course Porsche succumbed to the temptation long ago, and while it still prefers to be known as a manufacturer that launches its special editions from Weissach, it isn't shy about letting the marketing department carry some of the burden. Cue the Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition for the Cayenne, Cayenne E-Hybrid and Cayenne S models - regular four-door or coupé.
Have a guess what the theme is with this car? That's right. Basically, think the opposite of Audi's Black Edition models. You get satin-finish Platinum paint, a palette that continues through to the front air-intake slats, the Porsche lettering sitting behind the rear LED light bar, and the standard 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels. Those wheels are unique this trim and won't be available on other Cayennes.
There is some black in there, too, just to add in some contrast. You'll find it only on the tailpipes and the window trims, though. What if you don't fancy Platinum Paint? In that case your money will still be good in a Porsche Centre near you. You can also order the Platinum Edition in solid black and white, plus metallic Jet Black, Carrara White, Mahogany, Moonlight Blue and special-order Crayon.
The Crayon-coloured seat belts aren't special-order, though. They come as standard, along with brushed aluminium door kick plates that carry the 'Platinum Edition' logo to "catch the eye." There are also textured aluminium and silver-coloured trims that splash the platinum look elsewhere in the interior. As well as trying to appeal to buyers' need for individuality, there's the usual equipment hike to sweeten the deal. Inside, the highlights are the leather-trimmed, eight-way electrically adjustable leather sports seats (with the Porsche Crest embossed on the headrests), ambient lighting, an analogue dash-mounted clock, and a surround-sound Bose upgrade.
Those features are complimented on the outside by LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), privacy glass and a panoramic sunroof. Finally, for any further tweaks you may wish to make, Porsche says its Exclusive Manufaktur programme is available to make your Platinum Edition truly your own - at a cost, of course.
And on that subject, what does the Platinum Edition cost? From £69,230 for the regular Cayenne four-door (an uplift of £6,780, although that varies throughout the range) and £70,350 for the equivalent Coupé. It tops out at £81,580 for the S Coupé. The Platinum Edition is on sale now and the first customer cars will arrive at Porsche Centres from May. Owners will be invited to the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone to test their car and their skills away from the public road.
