Talk of a track-focussed version of Lamborghini’s rear-wheel drive Huracan has been circulating the PH forums since late 2019, but now we have the first tangible evidence of the long-rumoured Super Trofeo Omologato. Shots of a test mule wearing an enormous rear wing, big diffuser and additional aero addenda have surfaced on Instagram courtesy of Allanlambo - and while Lambo has refrained from commenting on the car’s precise identity, it does appear to fit the bill of said STO.
The concept does rather make sense; combining all existing Huracan themes into one package. We’ve had a track-foccused variant in the brilliant Performante, there’s a new rear-drive base in the EVO RWD and there’s plenty of aerodynamic influence to take from Lambo’s 2020 Super Trofeo racer. Throw all the best bits from that lot into one car and you’ve got practically got a Super Trofeo Omologato by default.
There won’t necessarily be an increase for the 5.2-litre V10’s power output, because the EVO RWD was given a 30hp decrease to 610hp compared with the all-wheel drive car (although you wouldn’t bet against it either). Instead, the focus is likely to be on chassis performance: expect the mechanical and aerodynamic grip to have been enhanced, emphasised by the centre lock wheels and big brakes on the prototype. The forums - hat tip to SVJBalboni - suggests it’ll come hand-in-hand with 150kg of weight loss, too.
The prospect is a tantalising one. The Performance was very moreish indeed, so the thought of stripped-out Huracan - one built to challenge the 911 GT3 RS and McLaren 600LT - with that mid-mounted V10 to boot, needs no further selling. Unlike those rivals, the STO is expected to be capped at 700 units – or potentially even less. And with no official word from Lamborghini yet, don’t expect to see one any time soon. Still, something tells us it’ll be totally worth the wait.
