One additional benefit of the Toyota GR Supra's use of BMW power is that it's attracted interest from tuners with expertise in German engine work. The B58 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six of the Supra also goes into BMW's 40i models, meaning AC Schnitzer could get straight to work on its first Toyota by offering a plug and play piggyback kit that unleashes 400hp - and, most importantly, comes with a three-year warranty.
The boost of 60hp over standard is joined by a 20 per cent growth in torque to 443lb ft, which Schnitzer says "improves agility", presumably thanks to the enhanced throttle adjustability handed to your right foot. The improvement looks well set to address Dan's requests after his first drive in the GR Supra, when he was left impressed but also ready for more grunt. Although they arguably amount to the entry-point in the world of tuning, given the 580hp output Litchfield has achieved with its extensively modified Supra.
Schnitzer's piggyback ECU system is appealing for being quick and simple, though, as it's comprised of a control unit and connection wiring, and requires only the use of 98 octane fuel to offer its improvements. The map is said to boost efficiency as well as performance - although no economy numbers have been released - and works with the standard intake and exhaust system, including the particulate filter. For those wanting fruitier vocals, a sports silencer is offered.
The German tuner's work goes beyond the engine bay, with buyers offered RS coilovers providing height and damper rate adjustment, as well as 20-inch wheels (up from Toyota's largest 19-inch rims) and a body styling package. The latter includes a front splitter, side skirts and a carbon rear wing, as well as new bonnet air vents. Inside, there's new aluminium and carbon fibre trim for the gear paddles, pedals and centre console, as well as Schnitzer's own iDrive rotary control cover. For a first go at Toyota work for Schnitzer, we think it's a pretty good one!
