To a certain subset of car fan, most likely one raised on a diet of Gran Turismo and not enough socialising, Spoon is a very significant name. Much like Mines, RE-Amemiya, Tom’s, Blitz, Amuse and so on. Because when the Japanese car industry was at its most exciting, these tuners were making them more exciting again. Wild numbers from RB26s and 2JZs, rotary screams you never thought possible and, in the case of Spoon, VTEC Hondas that revved to the moon and back. They were awesome.
However, now is not the time to reminisce - we’ll point you to YouTube for that - but instead to discuss Spoon in a contemporary context. Because Torque GT, the Devon-based importers of JDM specials par excellence (see the stocklist here, and hide your credit card) has now joined the group of suppliers in Europe offering Spoon parts to customers.
Ok, that won’t send shockwaves through the industry, especially given customers on the continent already have their own distributors. But it’s interesting to note for UK buyers that the catalogue isn’t just cranks that can withstand 11,000rpm; Spoon does stuff for newer fast Hondas, as well. There’s an exhaust system for the current, FK8 Civic Type R, a baffled sump for the FN2 Type R, bits and bobs for the four-door FD2 and even some rear view mirror glass for a CRZ. That’s in addition to all the EP3, EK9, DC2 and S2000 goodies, of course.
So, if your hot Honda is due some summer love once we’re back on the road, Torque GT is there to take the hassle out of getting the Spoon special parts to the UK. Indeed, there’s a 2018 Civic Type R on sale there right now. Perhaps that opens the door to a deal on that exhaust…
