When you think of uses for a Mazda RX-8, numerous possibilities will come to mind: many people have done LS engine swaps, others have made track cars of them and some have simply used them as cheap, fun, rear-wheel drive road cars. Well, until the engine needs rebuilding...
What we've not seen before is an RX-8 rally car. But then there are probably lots of things you've not seen before on YouTube, some rather more appealing than others. This RX-8 has been built in New Zealand, using a rotary engine and, perhaps against expectations, it makes for quite a good rally car.
Well, we say good rally car, we mean a superb sounding rally car. Is it actually that quick in its class? Is it in fact terribly slow? Who knows? But listen to it for a few seconds and you'll cease to care.
The RX-8 shrieks its way throughout the rev range, howling to the point you think it must shift up at and then adding a few hundred more. It's an incredible noise, distinctive yet instantly recognisable and violent yet still quite smooth.
It's a video that's hard to stop watching for exactly that reason. Click the link below to see what we're on about!
