Best used restomods, continent cruisers for less

'Tis the season for restomod announcements. The Goodwood Festival of Speed, Monterey Car Week and our own Annual Service are the perfect platforms for restomodders to present their latest creations to crowds that’ll not only lap them up, but may even put their names down for one. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen Thornley Kelham’s take on the Porsche 356, the bonkers MST Mk1 EVO and the SGT Automobili 55-SGT to name but a few, and there’s even talk of Singer building its own supercar from the ground up. So we thought it best to kick off this week’s episode of The Gassing Station podcast by seeing if there are as many restomods in the classifieds as there are on the news homepage.

Turns out there are. And it’s not just full of Singer 911s, either, although we have included this exceptional ‘Surrey Commission’ in our list because, well, just look at it. Among our picks are a Jensen (or JIA) Interceptor R Convertible that’s featured on both Top Gear and The Grand Tour, a gorgeous Eagle-restored Jaguar E-Type and an Alfaholics GT 1300 Junior that’s been upgraded with a 2.0-litre engine. We’ve even had a few pass through our auction platform, including this Datsun 260Z that’s been upgraded with an RB26DETT straight-six from an R34 Skyline GT-R, though that found a new owner long ago. Still, if it’s a restomod you’re after, you need look no further.

Sadly, a restomod is off the cards for this week’s buying challenge, though we do have a bit more capital to play with than usual. PHer spikeymikey12000 had set aside enough dosh for a 992 Carrera S before their wife proclaimed she too was after a new car. With the budget now down to £45,000, it was up to Sam and I to find a “fun and fast” car that’s “comfy enough for European road trips.” Sam’s put forward this rather rare Mercedes C63 AMG 507 Coupe, which not only ticks all the boxes but comes in around £6k under budget. As strong a contender as it is, I’m going with this Aston Martin Vanquish for £44,995. With it, you’re getting 12 cylinders, timeless looks and genuine GT usability. Admittedly, we spent so much time going through the auctions and classifieds that we ran out of time for our usual third topic. There are, however, some fleet updates to get through, with Sam on the lookout for a new set of seats for his 986 Porsche Boxster while I’ve had some considerable bills to pay on my BMW 435i Gran Coupe.
