Hard to imagine that a '60s Le Mans prototype could be used as a testbed for sustainable tech, but we’re kicking off today’s episode of The Gassing Station with a car that does just that. Lola, the racing outfit that’s had its finger in just about every pie in motorsport, has rereleased its epic T70 prototype in both racer and road car form. Not only that, but the ‘new’ T70S also packs cutting-edge technology like a fly-by-wire gearbox (the original is said to be quite a pain) and the magnesium chassis is constructed using solar-powered electrolysis. On top of that, both road and race car have been developed to run on sustainable fuel, which leads us nicely onto our first major topic.
Now, we try our hardest to skirt Formula 1 news on The Gassing Station. Watching a bunch of highly-paid sportspeople struggle to overtake each other isn’t to everyone’s taste, but given we’re three races in and there’s an unscheduled break where the cancelled Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix would have been, now seems like the perfect time to take stock and, depending on which side of the fence you sit, have a bit of a rant. PHer tangerine_sedge has whipped up a poll to find out how others are finding F1’s new rules, where power is split 50-50(ish) between combustion and electric power, and the yo-yo style racing it produces. You can give your verdict here and read some of the replies here. Bring popcorn.
If F1 does absolutely nothing for you, then fret not, as we’ve a buying challenge to get stuck into. PHer roca1976 has recently come into some inheritance and is eyeing a ‘pension pot’ car (as in, one that ideally won’t tank in value by the time it comes to moving it on). While we can’t see into the future, we headed into the auctions and classifieds armed with a budget of £150,000 to see what we thought might fit the bill. Sam’s landed on a grey over red leather Ferrari 612 Scaglietti manual for £129,990, while I’ve gone for a one-of-150 Aston Martin GT8 for a fiver shy of the budget cap. Both a superb manual GTs, and both will hopefully have as many admirers in the future as they do now, but if you think you can do better then drop your suggestions into the topic here.
To cap things off, we go through the replies in donkmeister’s ‘strangest manufacturer warnings’ topic, which is naturally brimming with gems. RandomCarChat picks the caution sticker slapped on Koenigseggs that warns against opening doors too close to kerbs, while legless found a warning on the satnav of their Audi A5 about an air raid in Stoke-on-Trent. But the best (so far) has to go to Jakg, who’s highlighted the gun dash symbol that appears on ex-police BMWs when the weapons safe has been left open. Make sure to add your own into the topic here, and give the pod a listen while you’re at it.
