Unless you’ve been too busy stuffing your face with festive treats this week to glance over the news, you’ll have seen that the European Union has come to its senses and backtracked on plans to ban combustion-engined passenger cars. A Christmas miracle! And, yes, carmakers will still be required to reduce their CO2 emissions by 90 per cent of their 2021 levels from 2035 onwards, so don’t expect manufacturers to ditch EVs entirely, but it does mean combustion power is here to stay for the time being. So what better way to kick off today’s episode of The Gassing Station than with Sam giving us his first impressions of a new V8 Ferrari?
Well, ‘new’ might be a bit of a stretch, because the Amalfi is essentially a heavily reworked Roma and features the same 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 up front, albeit with a 20hp to 640hp. Of course, we already knew that from the car’s reveal earlier this year, as well as the fact that it’d be ditching touch controls on the steering wheel for good ol’ fashioned buttons. It all sounds very promising and Sam’s convinced that it’s a step on from the Roma, which he eventually gets round to explaining after a small rant about driving his test car on soggy roads while all the other outlets got perfect conditions. On the upside, that does mean his review is a bit more pertinent to what Amalfi owners in Britain will be dealing with on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, as Christmas is just around the corner, it seemed fitting to go with an estate-themed buying challenge to round off the year. You know, for cramming all the presents into. Or the bristly remains of a dead Christmas tree. This one comes from PHer rainmasterb, who’s looking for a performance estate for £10,000, which proved to be one of our most tricky challenges of the year owing to there not being a huge amount of cars to choose from. Nevertheless, Sam stumbled across this stately home-grade Mercedes-Benz E500 Estate with just one previous owner and only 87.5k miles on the clock for £9,990. A tricky one to beat, that, but I think I’ve got it topped with this B7 Audi S4 Avant with fewer miles. It’s a smidgen over budget at £10,495, but it otherwise looks superb and, with a 4.2-litre V8 up front, will sound just as good too. Of course, you can submit your own in the topic here.
To round things off, we’ve had a dig through TeaVR’s ‘the car you can't bring yourself to sell’ topic, and there are some brilliant responses in there. Elder can’t let go of their Skoda Citigo, rossub bought a GC8 Subaru Impreza WRX at 26 and still has it some 23 years later, while msportpanda’s story about why they can’t let their BMW Z4 M Roadster go will make you want to cling on to whatever’s parked on your driveway. Unless, you know, it’s a Qashqai or the like. Chip your own in here, but make sure to give the podcast a listen first. This will be our final episode of 2025, so we’ll see you all for more nonsense in the New Year!
