It’s now a quarter of a century since the MG Z cars were launched, the Rover 25, 45 and 75 getting a sporty makeover that nobody really saw coming. It made for some cult classic performance cars, too, ones that are finally being properly recognised after years in the doldrums. It’s been heartening to see the celebrations taking place this year for 25 years of the Z cars. As well as reigniting enthusiasm for a V8 ZT…
But there was another MG launched in 2001, also significantly upgraded over the base model and offered in bright colours that tends to be forgotten about: the MG F Trophy. It was the run-out special edition for the model ahead of the TF’s arrival, but there was more than just Trophy Yellow (or Trophy Blue) to the MG F: this was the first time the 160hp K Series had been found in the middle of an MG, a useful amount more than the standard 143. Useful enough for 60mph in less than seven seconds, in fact, and 140mph. In addition, there were forged wheels, AP Racing brakes, and lower, stiffer suspension. An overhaul befitting of a Trophy badge, basically.
So it was a riot on track, keener, flatter and faster than any MG F had been up to that point. It was pretty stiff on the road, but 2001 stiff is probably borderline sumptuous by modern standards. No doubt new tyres will help comfort 25 years later as well. And nobody will be driving a Trophy every day in 2026; a bit of shake, rattle and roll might add to the experience.
This yellow one is still looking vibrant all these years later, inside and out: there really was a lot of colour for this car, all the way down to the roll hoops. But with the lower ride height and wheels as well, it does cut a dash in a way that a regular F or TF of the era wouldn’t quite. And it’s the perfect alternative to a boring old black interior. Let’s call the Trophy of its time - and it fits in with the Z cars at least.
The condition of this one must be partly attributed to the mileage, which is showing just 33,000; very few given the years and owners behind it. There are a good amount of recent services to its name, plus a head gasket cambelt three thousand miles ago. It’s unclear how many years ago that was, however, and an MOT test this month mentioned overheating, so you’ll want to investigate that.
But no 25-year-old sports car is without its flaws, and nobody is entertaining an MG F purchase in 2026 without some awareness of its shortcomings. Hopefully they’ll be aware of all that’s good about them as well, and why it might be a fun way to spend £7,995. There won’t be much else out there with so few miles, the engine in the middle, and such a modest price; an MR2’s engine won’t feel quite as exciting as that fizzy K Series. And with so few Trophys left - plus the quarter-century anniversary - they’ve surely done all their likely depreciating. Surely. Now as then, an MX-5 isn’t the only way.
