Calum Lockie and Bo McCormick claimed a resounding class victory in the EERC Britcar race at Brands Hatch last week. In a last-minute arrangement, Calum partnered McCormick in his Ferrari 360 and at the end of the three-hour race they emerged with a class victory and third overall.
Calum had gone to Brands intending to partner David Smith as usual in their BMW M3. Unfortunately, a fresh engine developed problems in qualifying and they were forced to withdraw the car.
Thinking that he would not be racing, Calum went up the pitlane to check on the progress of McCormick, with whom Calum has worked. With the race distance increased from 2 to 3 hours Bo was pleased to offer Calum the chance to share the Ferrari in the race. "The problem with David's BMW was very disappointing, but it meant that I could take up Bo's great offer to share his Ferrari," said Calum.
With a three-hour race in warm weather and 35 cars starting on the Brands Indy circuit it was going to be a busy afternoon. Heavy traffic in qualifying left Bo starting 17th on the grid and sixth in class. However, in the course of racing for 105 minutes, including a fuel stop, Bo took the car through to ninth place overall. "He drove a great race and kept it clean and out of trouble," reported Calum.
With an hour and a quarter to go, Calum jumped into the Ferrari and raced flat out to the finish. "I just went for it. I drove as fast as I could without taking big chances," he said. Calum was able to pull back several laps on the leading cars as the pit stops unfolded and by the end of three hours he was up to a class winning third overall!
"The team produced a great car and it didn’t falter once in three hours of flat-out running. So I went from a disaster with the BMW engine to winning! It was also Bo's first Ferrari win so that made it even more special."
