indeed, could have been a towbar, and maybe not his/het fault, say someone in front wanted out the parking space, first drove a bit to the rear and...bamm, but mostly soft plate so maybe the driver did not even know it hit or thought, hm, small, nobody is looking, auf widersehn?Error_404_Username_not_found said:

Sorry, but there it is. Sad to see. ETA: even though I'm no fan either.
Patina can come from regular use as well as neglect. I suspect that in this case it's the former. It's also a look, fashionable or otherwise, that a much loved, much cared for and well used car develops over time.
What's the guy supposed to do? Repaint it when it doesn't need it, and polish it every weekend?
It's a lovely original old E type out on the road, why denigrate it and it's owner?

Exactly this - it sounded in very rude health, and I’d choose this over a garage queen every day of the week. One of my biggest regrets is repainting my 1969 XJ6 - sure it looks fabulous but when I look back at the photos of the day i picked it up in 1998 with slightly dull paint, wing mirrors and tow bar in situ (both added by the original owner and removed during the repaint) I feel a real twinge of sadness. I like a car to show its history.Patina can come from regular use as well as neglect. I suspect that in this case it's the former.
