RE: MG 6 | Shed of the Week
Discussion
I don't hate it. Uninspiring looks without being horrid, reasonably quick and if the review is accurate, reasonable handling. I'd have it as a shopping car that I'd be happy to throw around a track occasionally. The fact it's odd and a bit crap is a novelty that appeals to me.
Nowhere near as boring as something like a 118d.

I'm not trawling through AutoTrader, Gumtree or anywhere else to justify anything to you, plus I'm not looking for a car but as someone who sheds I'd not spend 2 grand on this, is that ok for you?
If you want an example I'll give you this, it's mine, it cost less than a grand and in 2 years of ownership it's been flawless.
I like that, always fancied a manual petrol version but never found one for sale.If you want an example I'll give you this, it's mine, it cost less than a grand and in 2 years of ownership it's been flawless.
My daily was also 2k, has been a great.

Proper shed. These and the MG3 are great low cost cars for the financially 'astute'.
People these days don't know the meaning of the word shed.
You what? Back when Garlick did it it used to mean things like Rovers SD1 V8s, Porsche 924s and at one point a Mazda RX7 IIRC! The point of the column used to be "here's an interesting car for so little money it doesn't matter if it breaks down", not "here's some crushingly sensible cheap transport". Stuff like this MG only found its way in more recently as the market tightened.People these days don't know the meaning of the word shed.

Awful, ugly and just screams you’ve given up on life.
Couldn’t agree more!Awful, ugly and just screams you’ve given up on life.
I gave it one star as it’s an affront to the name MG, ( just let it die) as pointed out it’s a rehash of the other ‘thing’. Same for the Cyberster or whatever, it should never be called an MG it should be what it is a Pingpongyan or something to prove its heritage.

It's a pretty cheap means of getting about. Not inspiring at all but, if someone wants cheap family car, I can see why it might appeal.
Stuff like this is no different to what the likes of Hyundai and Kia used to do. They're cheap cars using technology that's largely recycled from other manufacturers. It was a way to break into the market without needing to spend ridiculous sums on R&D. Once they had established themselves and found their feet, they started to do their own thing, and now Hyundai and Kia have become major players. If you look at what the Chinese brands are doing now, they are on exactly the same trajectory.

While I'm sure that's lovely, someone who is looking for cheap family transport would be unlikely to buy something like that unless they're a car person and aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty. Rightly or wrongly, all most people are going to see with a car like that is the potential for big bills. If you want an example I'll give you this, it's mine, it cost less than a grand and in 2 years of ownership it's been flawless.

Yep it certainly helps if you can do all the work yourself. There are a few companies who recycle Merc's around my way so for me it's no more expensive than running a Mondeo (which I also like a lot).Stuff like this is no different to what the likes of Hyundai and Kia used to do. It's Shed of the Week for a reason. Has to be a car that is actually available on the day of publication, not a benefit of hindsight car bought two years ago.

Stuff like that can be a hard sell, there are bargains out there where the cheaper to run stuff is what has gone up a lot.
Yes I think the thirsty sheds (like my Cat N BMW 330i) would be hard to shift because shed buyers are usually on a tight budget so want low running costs too. Thankfully it doesn't matter because I have no plans to replace it.

Maybe the Chinese wouldn't have needed to buy the MG brand if the British hadn't made such an arse out of their domestic car industry.

Prices haven't changed that much over the last 2 years at the bottom of the market, I know because I look far too much, still plenty of these about from £1700-£2500 in reasonable nick so it doesn't have to be a benefit of hindsight car, if you know what you're doing.
Agree 100%, some people just can't be arsed to look further than their nose.MightyBadger said:
Would you buy this MG over a more evenly matched 318i?
Hmm, yes probably. And I'd go in knowing that the 318i was a better car. From new, I wouldn't be looking at either, but we're talking she'd value here. There are two reasons. A very personal feeling but I've always had a hang up about getting a lesser powered model of a particular engine type, so it would have to be a 320i, the most powerful of the 4cyl NA. Similarly I'd not have a 325 when the 330 exists. The MG is also a bit quicker but that's a minor thing.
Secondly and most importantly, it's unusual. I'm very much for a car that is rarely seen, particularly on track or at a show which is where I'll take pretty much anything I have. I know this doesn't represent the majority of car buyers, but then again the majority of car buyers don't have enough interest in cars to be memorising countless engine specs, and spending several years through thousands of posts waffling about cars on a motoring forum.
Just for a small insight into the way my mind works, most of my friends bought Clios, BMW's and Civics as track cars. I chose this over those:
I like to think that this is a somewhat understandable view on this forum.
TLDR: I'd chose the MG over a BMW 318i, but most wouldn't, and nor should they since the BMW is objectively a better buy.
