The dealership i work in try their best to make the valeters fit number plates.
As you can imagine, they’re valeters for a reason.
If it’s a used or new Toyota i do my best to do them myself as i just can’t bear seeing them after they’ve done them.

This looks lovely and reasonably priced considering the white (grey?) background. Wonky plate makes my teeth itch however.
It's always the little things that put me off. If they've not paid attention to a wonky plate, being such a small job that makes a big difference, what else is there that could be wrong? Probably many more complex, time consuming issues that have been ignored.

Though... it might be fine - someone buy it and let me know biglaugh
Different plates front and back, too, but it’s a lovely smoker, surely.

Are there any barges that are a bit smaller? I do a few runs in to town where I need to parallel park or go in to a multi-story, but for the most part it will be for comfy cruising.

I'd want it to be:
Automatic
Petrol
300bhp or more (I could maybe drop to 250bhp).
4+ doors

Comfort and quality materials are my priority.

I also like cars that make you feel good and have a uniqueness to them, not just performance but the manufacturer actually seemed to take pride in what they were building.

My budget would be up to £9k.

Any suggestions?

Ooooh that is lovely. And it reminds me of this film.

Oooh

2006. 750 Sport

£5500 on the screen

Soft close doors

But, barbera red metallic (burgundy?) with beige. Nice.

The thin wall tyres spoil it for Thread compliance though, but still.

Finding ‘manufacturer actually seemed to take pride in what they were building’ may be a challenge!

In a smaller car too. The last small car that was just like the bigger car only smaller rather than being a grotty cost reduced thing was probably the Mercedes 190E.

For pride in what they're building and genuine quality rather than superficial VAG style nonsense you could look at Lexus, both the GS and LS are fabulously high quality products but I've no experience of the IS. Not sure they sold one with any real go shy of the IS-F though.

I think you'll need to define "a bit smaller". What other car's exterior dimensions do you want it to be similar to? Mondeo? Focus? Fiesta?

If it helps, RWD barges usually have a surprisingly good steering lock so will be as manoeuvrable in a car park as a FWD hatch a size smaller. My E-Class was great for parallel parking compared to a Mondeo, Passat or Vectra.

LEXUS
Having done a fair few jobs on my LS460 now, I can vouch for that. Decent plating on fasteners means I've only encountered one rusty one despite it driving on salted roads. I've found all sorts of strategically placed plastic dampers for NVH in doors, under suspension, behind trim panels.

It all still works, despite being 16 years old.

5-series, E-class, S-Type or smaller is where I'm thinking.

Interesting point.

I'd definitely echo those that recommended a Lexus. No doubt about it in my mind.

Probably not thread spec but looks a very clean early e39, I particularly like the heated cloth

Which model? I had an LS460 and loved it. Give me a shrunken one of those and it would be perfect.

Lexus as other people have said. Maybe the Honda Legend as well. Seems like a very well engineered car with some interesting features, 4wd etc.

Those shortened plates can FRO, as can a small percentage hailing from Chesterfield (well, she was actually quite large) - but aside from that, I like it.

In my days as an LS400 owner I spent quite a few weeks driving a GS300 when the LS was having warranty repairs.
Definitely smaller than the LS, so in Mercedes terms more E class in size than S class.
Which means, as many of you will have realised, not actually a lot of difference in size.
And I can confirm that it was of decent quality.

Before that I had a Renault 25 and then a Renault Safrane. Mentally they were French Mondeos to me, so I was most surprised when I parked next to a Volvo 240 estate, which I thought of as a "big" car, and the Volvo was actualy several inches shorter. I suppose the mental impression was more a status one than a physical one, and the fact that both Renaults were 2 litre.

Even if you go "down" to an IS250 and throw just £4k on a really good one, you'll be amazed at the quality.

However, the chappy wants something with 250-300hp, so that rules out the IS/GS V6, the Hybrid GS, leaving only the GS430 V8 which might be getting a bit long in the tooth now, they can certainly be had well in budget though.

Don't know if £10k is on the money but it looks great.

Lovely looking thing but I suspect it might be having an "on the move" oil change issue.
