Bizarrely my wife has suggested we store one of our cars instead of selling it.

I’d prefer to choose a place that someone is happy to recommend rather than just picking one from Google so is anyone willing to recommend a storage firm within easy reach of either South East London or Newcastle?

Is it mega expensive or a kind of sentimental thing ?

If the later rent a local lock up garage ?

It’s a McLaren 650s, so not crazy expensive but still something that needs to be safe.

A local lock-up would be fine, but being in the stickbroker belt may well cost more than a proper facility outside of London.

I was in a similar situation in north London a few years ago. In the end I rented an underground parking space in a gated community around the corner from where I live. It’s proved cheaper than a purpose-built storage site and I can come and go whenever I like. Storage places often require notice before you take the car out, something I would find annoying. The car is covered with an indoor cover and it’s never been damaged the whole time it’s been there.

Yep I previously did that. I need storage too as I have just put a deposit on (yet!) another - house near the M25 but no new build flats where I am unfortunately.

I know people that have used both these companies for stuff from classic Astons to restomod 911's.

Make sure it's dry wherever you decide to store it. Damp in the air is a killer on an unused car.

I have done that for a week or two when having builders round etc. but was worried about careless drivers opening doors onto my car. At least with a decent storage place the cars are kept a reasonable distance from each other. If I had an 85k+ McLaren leaving it in a car park would be a worry - or am i being paranoid?!

You are not being paranoid. I rented a secure lock up last autumn and it has been money well spent. It’s a little bit on the expensive side but it’s very secure, new modern units with electricity included in the price and it’s worry free.

My council owned lockup costs me £50 a month to rent. It's dry, secure and in a well lit and gated compound.

Which part of the council did you speak to to get that?

More than triple that for a council lockup in central London!

OP - storage will be far cheaper near Newcastle than the south-east. I found a place this week that is £1300 a year including a trickle charger. Make sure you keep your own laid-up insurance policy too so that you are not reliant on the storer’s insurance.

I’ve found that people who live in gated communities in London often have quite nice cars themselves and are respectful towards other people’s vehicles. It also helps having CCTV and a concierge on site where I park.

OP.

Happy to recommend somewhere close to J7 M11 although it maybe too far from SE London to make it worth while. Let me know smile

We rented a council garage years ago and getting it required nothing more than filling in an application form and depositing it at the town hall. I'd imagine such things are done on the internet these days, so would suggest looking for 'garages' on the local authority's website.

You'll face several issues with the council route, however:

1) If memory serves, one has to reside in the same local authority area as the garage itself.

2) Competition for lockups is fierce and there is a waiting list for them in many places. We had to wait at least a year to get ours.

3) Expect any council garage to be on the primitive side. Most were built in the sixties and few have been improved since then.

4) You probably won't have any choice as to where said lockup is, in the sense of the actual road.

5) Lockups are becoming fewer and further between, especially in London and the South East. Developers like buying garage blocks as brownfield sites and cash-strapped councils love to sell them for the same reason.

Having said all that, there are still decent council garages about the place and hiring ours was a pain-free experience.

OP, have a think about the need for a power supply to keep the car on a battery conditioner? Lock-up garages won’t have such a thing and the other thing will be how it affects your insurance, especially given the likely value of your car?

Proper car storage is probably in the SE around £250/month...I did a quick search & this was one example... https://hofmanns.co.uk/car-storage/

That’s the sort of thing I’m looking for but it’s too far away. Ideally I’d like something no more than twenty minutes away from SE London or Newcastle.

I could do with a similar solution, though it's for a borked 3 Series that has immense sentimental value but no monetary value whatsoever, so the storage needs to be dirt cheap. I might or might not get round to restoring the car at some point. There's a motorhome storage place near me with prices from £100 per quarter, which will do if they'll let me leave a car in their under cover part. Garages are way too expensive for my requirements in my neck of the woods.

I assume you mean Newcastle-Upon-Tyne rather than Under-Lyme but if but does happen to be the latter I can possibly assist.

Duke of London are about to open a new storage facility in Brentford, SW London.

Could be 20 minutes away from you if you drive fast enough. wink
