For reasons I won't bore you with I'm going to start again with my lawn so want to remove the existing turf. I'm planning on hiring a proper petrol turf cutter to do this.

I'd like to do it this coming week but showers are forecast on most days - can I use a petrol turf cutter on a wet lawn, or must it be dry please?

It's under 200m2 - I assume I can comfortably do this in one day?

Thanks

Generally speaking when the ground is damp the turf will cut a lot easier. So you want it to be damp. If its sodden its worse and if its bone dry its worse. At the same time you dont want the grass too wet as the machine might not be able to get traction.

200m2 on your own? Will be hard work, but possible. Depends on the turf cutter too. Most of them cut 400-600mm wide. I reckon half a day to cut the turf and then another half a day to roll it all up. Then perhaps an hour or two going round hitting the areas you didnt catch the first time!

Just my 2ps worth!

Thank you. Sounds like I should probably hire the cutter for 2 days..!

A lot of it depends on the ground, you could have the cutting done in a couple of hours if its easy going.

Or it could take 4 or 5 times that. If there isnt much price difference then a couple of days would give you the ability to take your time and go over any areas you missed. The bit that will take the time is removing the old grass once its cut especially if you have long runs to a skip.

If you have a helper then its going to be a lot easier.

On jobs like that I would put 3 lads on it and have it done in half a day, usually, to remove 200m2 with a turf cutter, barrow out the old grass.

They would do about 80-100m2 a day for remove, prep and relay turf. We would have a power barrow though and would prob take a mini digger on jobs of your size.

HTH.
