𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Launched to celebrate Mäkinen and co-driver Risto Mannisenmäki’s 1999 World Championship rallying win, the Evo VI TME, to give it its abbreviated name, effectively equated to an Evo 6.5 with a revised body kit, an upgraded turbocharger with titanium blades usually reserved for the more hardcore RS versions, factory ‘tarmac’ suspension settings which were 10mm lower than previously, a quicker steering rack, white 17-inch Enkei alloys and a bigger-bore exhaust.
It all added up to a factory-built road going rally car and has long been recognised as the most desirable of the Evo variants. Produced in greater numbers than its contemporary Subaru rivals and hence not (yet) subject to the same kind of increase in values, it nonetheless still looks like a car you can buy with your head as well as your heart.
This example is finished in the lesser-seen blue and is very well turned out, if not concours-ready. That means that you can enjoy its readily accessible performance without worrying too much, and you can always take care of the cosmetics later. Talking of the way it goes, while no-one necessarily believes Mitsubishi’s original quoted power figure which was listed at the unofficial ‘cap’ agreed with the Japanese government of the time, a remap shows this one putting out 337hp on a rolling road, which is a useful bump.
After its recent years of inactivity, with a recent service and a fresh coat of underseal to protect the underside, this car is begging to be driven. Yes, we’d understand if you just wanted to preserve and look at it, but our inclination would be to embrace your inner rally driver.

• The owner tells us that around eight years ago, the car received a fully rebuilt TME engine, installed by specialist Veysport Performance
• There’s a collection of invoices from throughout the car’s life including a full refurb of the wheels in 2017
• The car was off the road for a few years between 2018 and 2021, during which time the MOT tester must have mis-keyed the mileage as, despite not being used, the car is reported as having added miles in 2019 and lost them again in 2021
• Prior to the most recent MOT, the car is reported to have received the attentions of Carcraft Engineering who addressed all of the corrosion issues to make the car MOT-worthy again and applied a fresh coat of underseal
• The vendor tells us that the latest service was carried out at the time of the last MOT by Veysport Performance
• Two keys
• Current MOT expires 19 Sep 2024
• HPI clear
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Red and black “T Makinen Edition” embroidered Recaro seats and a Momo steering wheel help to mark this car out as something special when you open the door
• The seats are in very good condition throughout and the dashboard looks to be in good order too, with no cracks or significant scratches
• On climbing aboard, you’ll note the Ralliart-branded mats and a discreet logo on the speedo
• There’s an aftermarket radio with USB for those moments when you’re not fully on it
• The generously-sized boot is neat and tidy with a Ralliart-branded boot carpet and under the floor is a spare wheel, jack and tool kit
• In all, it’s in very good condition for its age and while not immaculate, it’s very clean
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Photographed in its natural habitat with a forestry background, we’re sure you’ll agree that it looks fantastic
• Blue paintwork really suits the car and the combination of the rear wing, white wheels and red Ralliart mudflaps to match the brake callipers give it the look of a barely domesticated stage car
• The bodywork looks to be nice and straight and the paint in very good order with only a few scuffs and scratches, though the owner notes that there is some bubbling present on the bonnet, roof and boot and that a respray would be needed to make it perfect
• The 17-inch white Enkei wheels received a full refurb in 2017 and still look to be in good condition with no kerbing; tyres are Bridgestone Potenza S001s all round with at least 6mm of tread
• The underside has been full undersealed
• Overall, it’s a real head-turner that with some work could be even shinier, but that might get in the way of driving it in the manner which was originally intended
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
• 1997cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine with performance air filter fitted
• Mapped by Norris Designs with dyno printout showing 337hp
• Five-speed manual gearbox
• Four-wheel drive with Mitsubishi’s party piece, Active Yaw Control, a torque-vectoring system widely credited with making the Evo feel more agile than its competitors
• Brembo brakes all round
• It looks every inch the tarmac stage car and should go like it too
