𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
The cat’s knackers. The dog’s danglies. The bee’s knees. Whatever your favoured body part/ member of the animal kingdom combination, tell us that this 635CSi doesn’t look it. And you’ll seldom see one that looks this good, because it’s one of the Motorsport Edition run out specials produced in 1989.
Reportedly limited to just 180 cars, split evenly between Misano Red, Macau Blue and Nogaro Metallic Silver, they added to the already generous Highline specification and, rumour has it, came with a breathed-on version of the creamy 3.4 litre M30 straight six. It’s not known how many of them have survived but is thought to be only a fraction of the number produced.
The result of this uprating is a magnificent Eighties grand tourer. Still looking sharply styled at the end of its production run, with its shark nose and frameless doors, it manages to be cool in a way that not all products of the decade of excess do now.
With deep-dish 17 inch split-rim BBS alloys that really set the car off, this Nogaro Silver example has been treated to a comprehensive restoration and is now in fabulous condition inside and out. Serviced regularly and cosmetically pampered since its restoration, it’s ready for its next owner to enjoy. Whoever takes it on, we’re sure that they will be garnering envious glances whenever the car makes an appearance.

• Registered 2 Mar 1989
• Full document pack
• A large folder of supporting documentation including service invoices and old MOTs
• Upon acquiring the car in 2019, the current owner took it to his local specialist for appraisal
• It was decided that it would be a prime candidate for restoration and so it was taken back to a ‘working shell’ by removing most of the key components apart from the engine
• The bodywork was reportedly stripped and repainted and a new set of genuine BMW wings were sourced and installed
• Mechanical work is described as including a full service and all belts, fluids, and filters were changed, brakes renewed and any aged parts replaced
• The full process took around 2 years and the owner tells us that the car has been regularly serviced since
• Two keys
• Current MOT expires 24 Mar 2024
• HPI clear
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Swing open the door and you’re greeted with high gloss chrome door kick plates, which mark this car out as something a bit special
• The cabin is swathed in hand-stitched black Nappa leather which covers not only the seats but also the door panels and dashboard
• The front sports seats adjust electrically with a 3-setting memory and have been part re-upholstered, meaning that they are in fabulous condition
• Elsewhere, the leather has been re-connolised and looks in very good order
• The generous specification includes air conditioning, a rear sun blind, anthracite headlining, graduated tinted windscreen, M-Technic 3-spoke steering wheel, electric slide and tilt sunroof, electric windows and a trip computer
• There’s also a fire extinguisher installed under the driver’s seat and a Pioneer radio/cassette player
• In the boot, there’s a fully-stocked BMW toolkit and a neat and tidy luggage area with a full size spare wheel under the floor
• Overall, it’s quite the eighties executive express, yet still holds its own today
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Finished in Metallic Nogaro Silver, de-chromed (with ‘shadowline’ exterior trim, in BMW-parlance) and with 17 inch split-rim BBS alloys, we’re sure you’ll agree that it looks fantastic in the pictures
• The front air dam, rear spoiler and wheel arch extensions conspire to give it a more sporting appearance
• The bodywork is all straight and there are no reported defects to the paintwork
• The alloys are unmarked and wear a set of Continental tyres that are reported to have almost full tread all round
• There are no chips, cracks nor discolouration to the light lenses
• Underseal has been applied and the underside looks to be very clean
• In summary, it’s cool, classy and in great condition
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
• 3430cc straight six that was rumoured to have a higher output than the 220hp that was standard for the 635CSi
• Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox and limited slip differential
• The car was supplied with M-Technic suspension and the stance looks spot on
• In addition to the work mentioned above, a new fuel tank was installed in 2009
• Following the restoration, regular attention should mean that this car is ready to go
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
The 635CSi Motorsport Edition may not come with quite the cachet nor the motorsport-derived engine of the M635CSi but it’s rather more attainable, arguably easier to live with day-to-day, and definitely not as expensive to fix. The average member of the public won’t be able to distinguish them either and it’s hard to ignore the charms of an example in as fine fettle as this one.
