Overview

We all want a Lamborghini, don’t we? At least, those of us who never quite grew up certainly do. But the harsh reality is that most people don’t end up owning a Gallardo. So back in the mists of the noughties Audi released something the world didn’t realise it needed: a Gallardo-based, mid-engined V8, with an Audi badge on the bonnet. And this brought our dreams just a little bit closer to reality.

Sometimes trailblazing isn’t fully understood at the time. And now, looking back from the future, the R8 seems to make total sense. It’s the kind of super-ish car that you can actually drive on the street, and even park outside overnight without losing too much sleep. The V8 produces over 400 horsepower, and you get Quattro four-wheel drive to help those horses hit the ground running.

This particular R8 is in very nice condition inside and out, with metallic grey paint and beige leather upholstery. It comes with a well-stamped service booklet, and invoices from Audi service centres.

So if you’re in the market for something with plenty of power, and the ability to deploy it with germanic precision, then this R8 has a lot going for it. And you get to ogle the mid-mounted V8 engine through the window every time you drive.

• Metallic grey paintwork is an understated choice and looks great, partly thanks to a ceramic wax coat that the seller tells us was applied this year
• There are no obvious chips or scratches
• 19-inch, ten-spoke alloy wheels in excellent condition
• They are shod in a set of Pirelli P Zero tyres
• There is some sidewall damage on two of the tyres
• All the window glass appears to be in good condition
• Headlamps clear and bright

Mechanical

• 414 bhp and 317 lb ft

• The seller informs us that the air conditioning radiator was replaced in August 2024

• Said to start, run, and stop very well, and sounds great
• The most recent oil service and inspection was carried out in July 2024 by quattro-tech
• MOT passed in July 2024 with the only advisories being for slightly oily rear shock absorbers, and a little play in the rear suspension ball joints
• The V8 engine is proudly on display through the rear window
• Engine bay very clean and tidy

Summary

In all, this is a very well presented example of an R8. It reminds us that it pushed boundaries when it was new, introducing the Audi badge to a new segment of the market. It charted new waters, so that we may now enjoy them with a sense of comforting familiarity.
