Overview
About 20 miles north-east of Stuttgart in Germany lies the sleepy village of Aafalterbach; home to just over 4,000 people, surrounded by orchards, and blessed with a name that translates literally to “apple trees and a stream”.
It’s a place which conjures up an image of summertime picnics, sleepy Sunday afternoons, thundering V8 engines and tyre smoke. A juxtaposition, maybe, but one that the community is very proud of, as since 1967 it has been home to Aufrecht, Melcher und Großaspach, better known as AMG.
Originally an independent tuning house run by Mercedes endurance racing drivers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, AMG became a wholly owned part of Mercedes-Benz in 2005, bringing with it the ability to create even faster and more outlandish machinery than ever before.
The C63 from 2018 onwards is a case in point, featuring a drivetrain described none other than PH as “a masterpiece”. It’s a formula that’s still as rich seven years on. Over at AMG HQ in Affalterbach, the V8s are a rare breed of engine still assembled by men and women, rather than by robots, using manual tools and proper crafts.
Only the very finest AMG models are assembled there; the ones that are too bespoke or a little too bonkers to be finished off down the road in Stuttgart. Yet despite its potential for lunacy, this is also a car that can serve most of your daily motoring needs without stress, as it’s quite laid back until you ask it to be otherwise.
It’s a C63 two-door coupé, which unlike previous iterations of the most compact full-fat AMG car, is the most popular body style in the UK. Sure, you can still get a four-door, a wagon, or even a four-door coupé, but it’s the sleek and sporty model that gets the most likes.
Add that to a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 469bhp on tap, a slingshot-fast nine-speed automatic transmission, a sumptuous level of trim and a long, advisory-free MOT and here’s a car that’s hugely appealing, not least because its original owner over £66,000 when new. Now’s your opportunity to own one for a fraction of that.

Summary
With prodigious power, a torque figure that could almost turn the world on its own axis and a phenomenal soundtrack from its thumping twin-turbo V8, this is a car that will properly stir your soul – a modern performance coupé created in a traditional mould, and with a nod to almost six decades of heritage from Aafalterbach.
Someone paid a lot of money for this car when new – the kind of sum that would have bought you a two-bed terraced house in some British towns. Today, you won’t need a mortgage to buy one, and if you do decide to take the plunge, we doubt you’ll be disappointed. This is a proper red-blooded performance car, albeit one that’s also a pleasure to use on a day-to-day basis. It’s really quite docile until you poke it awake, at which point it becomes a snarling beast. It’s that Jekyll and Hyde character that we like most about it.
