Overview

When Toyota released its Supermini Yaris in 1999 it didn't exactly strike a chord with the petrolhead population and seemed an unlikely candidate for a spicy hot hatch glow up. But fast forward to 2020 and the Japanese giant, in collaboration with its motorsport division Gazoo Racing (hence the nomenclature), unleashed the truly excellent GR Yaris on an unsuspecting public to rapturous applause.

Toyota knows a thing or two when it comes to making cars go fast and the GR Yaris was a rally-inspired stroke of genius. The project, led by Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda with input from none other than rally legend and four-time World Rally Championship winner Tommi Mäkinen, was green-lit as a way for Toyota to remain at the forefront of the WRC and the GR Yaris was homologated as a result.

This meant that at least 25,000 road-going examples had to be built, which basically gave us a rally car for the road, and it was brilliant. With a bespoke shell, its 1.6-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 260-ish horsepower mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive, the GR Yaris could hit 62mph from a standstill in 5.5 seconds and top out at a limited 143mph. Add a great chassis and tuned suspension to the mix and you get an incredibly tasty repast.

Unlike other hot hatches that were tweaked versions of their original incarnations, the GR Yaris was purpose built and this particularly peachy low mileage 2021 example is in excellent condition throughout, mechanically sound and comes with full service history. If you're after a modern hot hatch that truly is a joy to pilot then call off the search.

Summary

The Toyota GR Yaris continues to fly the flag for the humble hot hatch and remains a bit of a benchmark in its class.
