Overview

Yes V8s are great and all that, but why wouldn’t you opt for a couple more cylinders? They might come in handy someday. Especially as they push the power output up to 518 bhp, and the top speed to 196 mph — which in our books is pretty much 200 mph. And 200 mph is the kind of speed you can normally only achieve by going to France and getting on a train. So if you want to be the fastest person in town, then you should consider this gated manual V10 Audi R8.

Its Lamborghini Gallardo DNA runs deep, but the R8 takes the four-ringed badge and returns it to the world of high performance motoring. When it was first released, a few people were slightly taken aback by the presence of the Audi badge on an exotic-looking supercar, but we get it entirely. That winning combination of Italian flair and German engineering just makes sense.

This particular R8 comes in a pale shade of grey, and features some snazzy exterior trim pieces, in case it needed to prove it isn’t a boring Audi commuter car. But imagine if this was your commuter car: what a commute that would be.

To add to this R8’s kerb appeal, it’s a Spyder. This means it has a convertible soft top roof and cost even more when it was new (about £109,580 if we remember correctly). And that was 15 years ago, during which there have apparently been one or two financial ‘blips’ which mean that it would cost even more today. If they still made them, which they don’t.

We haven’t even got round to discussing the R8’s phenomenally good handling, and all-round performance. With the rarely-specified manual gearbox, it’s a treat for the driver. Needless to say it ticks all the boxes, as long as you don’t need to carry more than a weekend’s worth of luggage. A small price to pay for such a thrilling motorcar.

Summary
