Overview
We’re going to stick out neck out here and say that in the land of JDM, the Skyline is king. Forget your Mazda RX-7s and your Toyota Supras, the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R is the daddy. Always has been, always will be. The R32 – or Godzilla as it became known thanks to its all-conquering motorsport career – brought the Skyline name to the masses and the subsequent generation R33 built upon that legacy, but it's the R34 GT-R that arrived in '99 that really cemented the marque as a true performance, and indeed cultural, icon.
Equipped with the legendary 2.6-litre twin-turbocharged RB26DETT inline six-cylinder engine, the R34 GT-R is notorious for its almost mythical ability to be tuned, with tales of fully modified examples hitting 1000bhp and beyond, lore that was further propagated by the car's numerous appearances in popular media.
Laden with race-inspired tech, including a lap timer and G-force metre, the R34 GT-R's intent was clear from the get go – this was a car to be pushed and pushed hard. Today, prices have been rising steadily and the R34 GT-R not only presents as a hugely capable performance machine but also as a tidy investment.
The car we have available is a 1999 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R V-Spec, which means additional features including Nissan's ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel-drive system and an active limited-slip diff, as well as uprated suspension with a firmer, lower ride, and a redesigned front splitter and carbon-fibre rear diffuser. Intake and exhaust gas temperature readouts are also present on the LCD display.
Not only that but the car also benefits from a wealth of tasteful performance modifications which include HKS mushroom air filters, dump valve with inlet pipe and turbo timer, Trust titanium exhaust system, Tein coilovers and Spitfire coils. Numerous Nismo exterior upgrades are also present and the brakes have been upgraded too.
The car has also been treated to a recent full service by Japanese performance car specialists Abbey Motorsport, including a new timing belt. As a result this rare beast of a Skyline appears to be in rude health and is ready to be enjoyed as either a retro JDM show piece or as part of a wider collection.
