Overview

If the first Boxster was the car that saved Porsche back in the '90s then the third generation 981 series certainly perfected what had gone before. In line with the 991 generation 911 and using that car's design DNA the 981 Boxster was both longer and wider than the outgoing 987 model but somehow managed to be lighter and more fuel efficient despite seeing a hike in power over both flat-six engines initially offered – the 2.7 and the 3.4 in the S. 

The entry-level 2.7 was a brand new powerplant that offered 265bhp whilst the 3.4 topped out at a rather impressive 315bhp. A six-speed manual was the default transmission but a  seven-speed twin-clutch PDK was also offered and both are excellent gearboxes.

Everyone knows by now just how engaging the Boxster is to drive in any year or spec but to paraphrase George Orwell's Animal Farm, some Boxsters are more equal than others and the 981 is just that little more poised and that little bit quicker, offering a truly exhilarating experience at a pretty reasonable price point, all things considered. 

So, which one to go for? Well, sitting in the sweet spot between the standard Boxster and the shouty, stripped out Spyder, is the Boxster S with the aforementioned 3.4-litre, 315bhp engine. A standard Boxster is quick enough but with a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds (depending on the gearbox) and a top speed of 172mph, the S just pips it if performance is your huckleberry. 

This particular low mileage 2014 981 Boxster S is in superb shape thanks in part to a full valet with stage one paint correction and ceramic sealant and comes with the really rather excellent seven-speed PDK gearbox making it the quickest accelerating of the bunch, even getting dangerously close to the 3.8-litre Spyder's 0-60mph time.  

Fitted with a whole host of factory options, including sports exhaust system, Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and 20” Carrera S alloys, the car also comes with that all-important full service history and is reportedly driving perfectly following a recent full 12-year service by the seller, Porsche specialists Zuffenhaus.

Summary

Incredibly well maintained and presented, it comes to market in wonderful condition across the board and with such low mileage combined with the reassurance of a full main dealer and specialist service history. It looks good, sounds great and is raring to go.
