Overview
It's hard to believe that Audi's seminal R8 first broke cover over 20 years ago. It seems like only yesterday that the sleek German sports car hit the streets, wowing everyone in the process. It was a bit of a shock really because big power, handsome two-door supercars like the R8 were historically the reserve of exotic auto makers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini rather than the more composed, technologically focussed German firm but then it did share its underpinnings, and indeed its engine with the Gallardo.
Back in 2006 when the R8 launched, if you were going to borrow some bits and pieces to get the ball rolling on your brand new supercar then you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than Lamborghini's fire-breathing, V10-equipped sports car but Audi did just that and the R8 concept debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003.
Fast forward to 2015 and the second generation R8 makes its grand entrance, once more to universal acclaim, and once again utilising a Lambo's platform and engine – this time those of the Huracan. Ditching the V8 offered previously though and instead focussing on a 5.2-litre V10 FSI engine, the new Type 4S R8 produced 533bhp from the factory, powering all four wheels, a figure that would creep up to 602bhp in the more performance-oriented V10 Plus.
These figures would again increase for the post-2018 facelift models, now named the V10 Quattro and V10 Performance Quattro respectively, with 562bhp for the former and a whopping 612bhp for the latter being the order of business. Various tweaks to the brakes, steering and styling were also made at this point but suffice to say the later V10 Performance variant such as this particular 2020 example is arguably the pick of the litter.
Officially a paid up member of the 200mph+ club and with a 0-60mph time of around three seconds it's a seriously fast bit of kit that remains accessible in a way those more “exotic” supercars mentioned above can only dream of. Equipped with Audi's lightning fast seven-speed double-clutch gearbox paired to that gloriously lively V10, it's a match made in heaven and the car reportedly drives perfectly.
Complete with full online service history and in utterly superb condition throughout this low mileage Audi R8 Performance Quattro is as menacing as they come in its jet black colour scheme. It looks good, sounds incredible and will no doubt have you grinning from ear to ear every time you climb behind the wheel.

Summary
The Audi R8 is no longer being made, which is a crying shame because regardless of which generation you choose it remains an absolutely stunning piece of engineering and it would have been interesting to see which direction the model went in should it have continued production.
We'll always have the R8 though and this beautiful and hugely capable second-gen facelift example represents the pinnacle of the marque for many. Equal parts brains and brawn it's as if the Huracan put itself through University and got its doctorate. An extraordinary machine.
