Overview
If you have even the most passing interest in performance cars – and unless you’ve been in a coma for the last 5 years – then the likelihood is you do not need us to tell you about Toyota’s GR Yaris. The development, helmed by Gazoo Racing, of a bespoke bodied 3-door performance variant of the diminutive daily driver is now the stuff of legend.
Intended as a homologation special that would be as capable on the roads of Osaka as it was on the brutal stages of the WRC, no expense was spared. Toyota heaved the considerable weight of their technological prowess and innovation behind the project, and the outcome was predictably brilliant.
As a way to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, in almost any conditions, and while having a properly jolly time, the GR Yaris is pretty much unmatched. The original pre-facelift model (which this is), with its brilliant manual transmission, is particularly sought after. Adding the Circuit Pack, which you’ll find on this example, opens up even deeper wells of ability in the Yaris’ chassis too. With stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, as well as exclusive lightweight BBS alloys, the handling is even more nuanced and whip-crack reactive.
The owner took delivery of this car when new and has clearly cherished it. While mechanically standard and unmodified, a couple of minor but essential modifications have been made to the cabin. Wireless CarPlay capability has been added, as well as the mirror riser modification for improved visibility. Additionally, the VBD seat lowering kit has been added to both front seats. Combined, these changes enhance the driving experience and address two of the only criticisms of the car: the visibility around the rear-view mirror and the height of the front seats.
Barely broken in, with just over 10,000 miles on the clock, this handsome, stocky little road-going rally car represents great value for money. Presented in absolutely superb condition and with a specification to die for, we reckon this bantam-weight, rally-bred weapon is the perfect antidote to the modern obsession with ever-increasing horsepower and diminishing driving feel. We’re struggling to think of another performance car we’d rather live with on a day-to-day basis, it really is that good.
